Sensory Play: Fine Motor Skills + Pom-Poms

My toddler loves and adores all little things.

Especially those tiny little things that are on the do-not-give-to-little-kids-who-mouth-everything-that-comes-their-way lists. Well, here’s the list I’m working from this week: water beads, Strawberry Shortcake action figure accessories, sea shells, marbles, and mini cookie cutters. Ahem, and it’s only Tuesday!

I guess it’s a casualty of being the second child to a 3.5 year old sibling, but I suppose the good news is that she’s building an understanding of what can and can’t go in the mouth. To play to our strengths, I set up a mini pom-pom sorting game that occupied her in more ways than one.

Materials

  • Tub full of various pom-poms
  • Small bowl
  • Mini ladle
  • Large yogurt container with a hole cut in its top

The invitation

Lay it all out and see what your toddler does with it!

And here’s the first thing she did! Not at all what I expected, but I’m digging it.

And of course there was lots of scooping, filling containers, spilling, and dumping.

This is great sensory activity for building fine motor skills and developing color, size, and volume understandings.

Have you set up any successful invitations lately?

I have a TON of those pom poms that I picked up in a dollar bin not too long ago, but I wasn’t sure what to do with them just yet. This game is perfect for my little guy! Thank you!

I love the dollar bin, and always come away from it with new ideas! I would have gone nuts if I saw pom-poms in the dollar bin. Have fun!!
